Alontae Larrion Gross
Alontae Gross was born on November 22, 2005, in Des Moines, Iowa, where he has lived his entire life as part of a large family with 10 sisters and 5 brothers, making him the middle child of 15. Growing up in such a big family, Alontae learned the importance of community and teamwork early on.
Alontae attended North High School, graduating in May 2024. During his time there, he immersed himself in a wide range of activities, including the Black Student Union, National Honor Society, mock trial, tennis, bowling, student government, and Stomp Out Stigma. His hard work and dedication earned him recognition, including a place in the top 10% of his graduating class and being a four-year academic letter recipient.
Currently, Alontae is a first-year student at the University of Iowa, majoring in Criminology, Law, and Justice with a certificate in Leadership Studies. Though he is on the path to becoming an Attorney, he is still exploring various career opportunities that align with his passions.
Alontae’s journey with Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) began in his junior year when his counselor recommended the program. It turned out to be a transformative experience, leading to leadership roles such as local Vice President of Leadership Development, Chapter President, and Iowa State Career Association President—the first-ever for his state. In the 2024-2025 term, Alontae serves as the National JAG Career Association (JAGCA) Parliamentarian. His responsibilities include ensuring parliamentary procedures are followed in meetings to make sure every voice is heard and respected, while representing JAG students nationwide.
One of his proudest accomplishments is becoming a national officer after not being elected the first time he ran. Alontae’s perseverance and growth through JAG serve as a testament to his leadership and dedication, not only to his family but to his community. He hopes to inspire other students to get involved, find their voice, and use their leadership to bring positive change.
Alontae’s favorite quote is by Nelson Mandela: “I never lose, I either win or learn.” This philosophy drives his approach to challenges and failures, reminding him that every setback is an opportunity for growth. His advice to aspiring leaders is simple: be authentic, don’t let others change who you are, and remember that every “no” is just a step toward finding a better opportunity.
While Alontae is still shaping his long-term goals, he remains committed to finding a career that not only fulfills his passion but also provides him the stability to give back to the community that has supported him throughout his journey.
