Dair Grubb

Dair Grubb always knew she wanted to work with dolphins. Today she’s doing it: training at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg while serving on a volunteer marine search-and-rescue team on the water. In our first long-form Faces of JAG profile, Dair shares how a childhood dream became a daily reality, and how JAG helped her get there. As a JAG Career Association officer during the 2025-2026 school year, she built the leadership skills she now uses on campus, on the water, and everywhere her ambition takes her.

Darren Blackston, a member of JAG’s inaugural cohort, went from struggling academically to earning a college basketball scholarship, and a doctorate in education, eventually becoming becoming a professor of graduate research and public policy at Delaware State University. Meet Nyla: From Shrinking to Shining

When people asked Nyla who she wanted to be when she grew up, the answer was never simple.

“I didn’t know how to answer,” Nyla recalls. “Not because I didn’t have dreams, but because somewhere along the way, I stopped believing I deserved them.”

Born in New York, she was a child of “big heart and bigger light.” But life wasn’t always easy. Frequent moves and a constant sense of not fitting in caused her to retreat. “I started shrinking myself,” she says…
