JAG was introduced to the Tomah High School during the 2011-2012 school year. Since it's introduction, JAG Specialist Ed Powless says that everyone has worked diligently to reduce the number of students transitioning to charter schools and alternate education. Through various service learning projects, students have become more vested in their community and have related their experiences in these projects toward jobs and employer expectations. Students took on projects such as a toy drive assisting 38 needy families within their community and an autism fundraiser which brought in over $800 to donate to local autism centers.
The program has steadily grown and currently has 31 students enrolled as part of an in-school program where students meet daily. Each class has a designated lead student who is voted for, as well as a JAG program president. This year, under the leadership of Jordyn Lee (2012-2013 JAG Student of the Year/JAG President) and Cheyenne Powless (2013-2014 JAG President) the group created a float for the Warrens Cranfest Parade in Warrens, Wisconsin.
Donated from a local business, students were able to use a giant red "Radio Flyer" type wagon float. Then, using WAGON, created an acronym–"We Are Guiding Our Nation." After some discussions, students donned the name "JAGWAGONS" as their banner and battle cry.
To their surprise and joy, the JAGWAGONS finished 1st Place for Non-Profit Youth in the 2013 Cranfest Parade. The highlighted lyrics rang true for many of the JAG students who sang the song during the parade. The name of the song was “One Day”. The lyrics:
