WICHITA, Kan.– Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) students at Hutchinson Middle School – 8 raised $2,016 to support blood cancer research through giving up their personal time and resources to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Pasta for Pennies program.

JAG students at the Hutchinson Middle School – 8 dedicated the month of February to raising awareness for blood cancers in their community. Their dedication was evident when the students skipped their school dance to raise money at a high school basketball game. The students have a personal connection with the campaign because a local student is currently undergoing treatment for leukemia. When the students started the campaign, their goal was $800, which they exceeded in the first week. The students collected money through the seminar classes as well as at high school basketball games and online.

“We are excited to see the students work so hard in exceeding their goal in honor of their classmate,” said Janna LaCock, Executive Director of LLS’s Mid-America Chapter. “It shows how much of a difference students can make. Every penny really does make a difference.”

The Pasta for Pennies program is a partnership between LLS and Olive Garden. The program is designed to teach children how to set and reach goals, and the value of community involvement. Students spent three weeks during February raising funds to help bring about a world without blood cancers. By contributing their spare change and participating in other special fundraising events they are making a difference in the lives of local patients.
