JAGCA Secretary Shelby Williams on the Opportunities JAG Presents

I discovered JAG, and suddenly the world felt bigger.
Growing up as a young adult in a small town, I often felt limited, like there weren’t many paths to explore or opportunities waiting for me. Everything felt small: the community, the options, the expectations. But within that small community, I discovered JAG, and it opened doors I didn’t even know existed. Looking back, I realize I wouldn’t be the person I am today if I hadn’t taken a chance on the opportunities it offered.

That’s why I always encourage others to say yes when opportunities appear, even if they seem intimidating or unfamiliar.
Sometimes the things that scare us the most end up teaching us the most. I know how overwhelming it can feel to step into something new, so I want to offer guidance to anyone who needs it. Opportunities might come with uncertainty, but they also come with growth, connection, and confidence.

Confidence isn’t something we’re born with; it’s something we build.
Sometimes, self-assurance grows in small, surprising ways. Throughout my time in JAG, I’ve seen my confidence flourish. One of the biggest factors was participating in competitive events. I competed in Public Speaking, which was something I never imagined I’d be capable of. But with each practice, each performance, and each moment of standing in front of others, I felt myself becoming braver and more self-assured.

Taking advantage of opportunities becomes nearly impossible if you don’t trust yourself first.
And even if confidence doesn’t come naturally, it can be practiced. My biggest advice? Pretend you’re confident. Stand tall, speak clearly, and act like you believe in yourself—even on days when you don’t. Over time, that confidence stops feeling like an act and becomes a real, steady part of who you are.

Stepping into something new is a lot easier when you have people cheering you on.
Opportunities feel less scary when you have a support system standing beside you, reminding you of your strength. For me, one of those people was my JAG specialist. She believed in me long before I believed in myself. She recognized the potential I didn’t see and pushed me to reach it. Without her support, I’m not sure I would have had the courage to take advantage of the opportunities that shaped me.

No matter how prepared you are, mistakes will happen — and each one helps you grow.
When we take on new challenges, things can go wrong, but that doesn’t mean the opportunity wasn’t worth taking. Some of my biggest learning moments came from mistakes, especially in leadership roles. I’ve repeated mistakes, too, but each one taught me something valuable about responsibility, communication, and growth.

JAG helps prepare you for life, and life is full of trial and error.
What matters most isn’t being perfect; it’s being willing to learn, adjust, and try again. JAG gives you a safe space to practice these skills, pushing you to grow in ways you may not expect. Every mistake becomes a steppingstone to something better.

So, the next time an opportunity presents itself… take it. Even if it scares you.
Even if you’re unsure. Go into it with curiosity, courage, and an open mind. Rely on your support group, trust in the confidence you’re building, and allow yourself to learn from every experience along the way.

You never know where one small “yes” can lead. Opportunities have the power to shape your future, strengthen your leadership, and help you grow into the person you’re meant to become. When a chance comes your way, don’t hesitate, embrace it. The lessons, connections, and growth you’ll gain from it will stay with you long after the moment has passed.
