The JAG Board of Directors is pleased to announce that 101 scholarship applications were submitted by deserving JAG seniors from seventeen (17) states in hopes of being recognized as a 2014 Smith Scholar. The JAG Board established two committees to provide oversight of the Kenneth M. Smith Scholarship Fund and the selection of Smith Scholars. In 2014, applicants submitted the required documentation for the committee members to review and evaluate including: (1) application; (2) official high school transcript; (3) three letters of recommendation; and (4) two-page essay.
A few facts about the 2014 applicants:
- Range of grade point averages—a high of 4.0 and a low of 1.6
- Average grade point average: 3.14
- Eighty-four percent (84%) of applicants were accepted for college entrance
- Sixty-six percent (66%) of the applicants were planning to attend a 4-year college/university; twenty-two percent (22%) will attend a community college; three percent (3%) will attend a trade college; one percent (1%) will attend a military college; three percent (3%) will attend a technology center and, five percent (5%) were undecided.
- Forty-four percent (44%) were planning on a health career; eight percent (8%) an education career; ten percent (10%) a career in a business related career with the majority in accounting; seven percent (7%) in a psychology-based career; and the balance of applicants will pursue a wide array of career fields.
