JAG Student Featured in New York Times!

by | Dec 2, 2024 | News, News and Insights

At Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) we were thrilled to see one of our own, Angelo Cortina from JAG Arizona, featured in a recent New York Times article titled “Beyond the Degree: High-Paying Jobs You Can Get with a High School Diploma.” Angelo’s story is a powerful testament to the idea that success doesn’t have to come with a four-year college degree.

The article explores a new study by Burning Glass Institute that challenges the traditional narrative around career paths. The study identifies promising “launchpad jobs” that offer high earning potential and open doors to fulfilling careers for those without a college degree. Jobs like bank teller, pharmacy aide, and restaurant host might not initially seem glamorous. Still, they can equip individuals with valuable skills like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving – all critical for career advancement. Angelo’s journey is a perfect example of this concept.

Through JAG’s school-to-career program, he landed a summer internship at Credit Union West. This internship blossomed into a full-time teller position, and within two years, Angelo was promoted to loan officer. At just 21 years old, he’s already earning a significant salary and taking steps to further his education. Angelo’s story highlights the importance of skills development and career exploration.

JAG programs provide students with real-world experience and mentorship, helping them discover their talents and build a strong foundation for future success. We are proud to be part of programs that empower young people to pursue their dreams, regardless of their chosen path. The New York Times article emphasizes the need for a shift in public discourse around career options. While a college degree can be a valuable asset, it’s not the only path to a rewarding career. As the Burning Glass Institute study shows, many high-paying jobs are accessible with a high school diploma and the right skills training.

JAG is committed to helping young people navigate the ever-changing job market. We offer programs that equip students with the skills and experiences they need to succeed in “launchpad jobs” and beyond. We believe that every student deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential, and we’re here to help them do just that. Read Angelo’s inspiring story in The New York Times.
